Mediterranean in 2026: river, ocean, or small-ship? A decision framework

The Mediterranean question we get most often from our retirement-age travelers: which format is actually right for you? Here’s the boutique decision matrix our team uses on intake calls.

Three formats, very different trips

We hear it every February: “Jenny, we want to do the Mediterranean this year.” Great — but the word “Mediterranean” hides three completely different kinds of vacation.

1. Ocean cruise (1,500–4,000 passengers)

  • Best for: First-time Mediterranean travelers, multi-generational trips, travelers who want ship amenities.
  • Not best for: Anyone who cringes at crowded ports on a Tuesday at 10 a.m.

2. River cruise (120–180 passengers)

  • Best for: Deep cultural focus — Provence, Douro, Rhône. A slower pace. Easy logistics.
  • Caveat: Rivers aren’t the Med. Don’t call it a Mediterranean river cruise — the rivers are adjacent.

3. Small-ship / yacht cruise (30–500 passengers)

  • Best for: Repeat travelers, Greek Isles specifically, travelers who want to anchor off unnamed coves.
  • Caveat: Pricing is closer to a luxury hotel than a standard cruise.

How we narrow it down on an intake call

Our first two questions are always “who’s coming” and “how full do you want each day to feel.” Everything else follows from those answers.

A sample 2026 itinerary we love

An 11-day Rome → Athens sailing on a small premium ship with overnights in Santorini and Istanbul, April-May shoulder. Perfect weather, half the cruise-ship density, and pricing that lands between an ocean cruise and a luxury yacht.

The goal isn’t to sell you the biggest cruise — it’s to match the format to the trip you’re picturing. Tell us what you’re imagining and we’ll build a shortlist.
